Eastern Quebec, and more specifically the Gaspe Peninsula, is
recognized as having one of the highest densities of black bear
in North America. Over the past 15 or so years, our region has
seen a marked increase in our bear population which has prompted
our Wildlife department to increase the annual harvest of these
animals.
What is the reason for the population explosion of black bear?
The answer is simple. Black bear need a lot of food to satisfy
their energy needs and for sustained reproduction. Over the last
30 or so years, our forestry industry has been exploiting our
forests in a very aggressive manner. This in turn has given rise
to younger forest growth that not only sustains our populations
or bear, but also, of moose as well. Today, both species have
seen a marked increase in their populations, especially with
black bear, which has no given rise to a few problems in rural
areas. This may be considered a big problem for local residents,
but is seen as a great problem for outfitters and sportsmen!
With such a high density of black bear in our area, it is no
wonder that our outfitters have such an impressive success rate
with their guests.
